      Civil war– American Civil War was a fairly bloody time in American History. Several soldiers and civilians on both sides of the divide experienced greatly during this epic period of American History. Below is a list of the deadliest Civil War battles based on total casualty count. This includes all types of casualties – wounded, killed, missing and presumed dead, etc. They are presented in order from the most casualties to the least.

      1. The Civil War Battle of Gettysburg:  The Battle of Gettysburg happened in Pennsylvania on July 1-3, 1863. Robert E. Lee was the Confederate commander overseeing 75,000 Confederate troops. George G. Meade was the Union commander overseeing 82,289 Union Troops. This battle was won by the Union. There were a total of 51,112 casualties in this battle, 23,049 Union / 28,063 Condeferate.
      2. The Battle of Chickamauga  :  The Battle of Chickamauga happened in Georgia on September 19-20, 1863. Braxton Bragg was the Confederate commander overseeing 66,326 Confederate troops. William Rosencrans was the Union commander overseeing 58,222 Union Troops. This battle was won by the Confederacy. There were a total of 34,624 casualties in this battle, 16,170 Union / 18,454 Condeferate.
      3. The Battle of Chancellorsville : The Battle of Chancellorsville happened in Virginia on May 1-4, 1863. Robert E. Lee was the Confederate commander overseeing 60,892 Confederate troops. Joseph Hooker was the Union commander overseeing 133,868 Union Troops. This battle was won by the Confederacy. There were a total of 30,099 casualties in this battle, 17,278 Union / 12,821 Condeferate.
      4. The Battle of Spotsylvania : The Battle of Spotsylvania happened in Virginia on May 8-19, 1864. Robert E. Lee was the Confederate commander overseeing 50,000 Confederate troops. Ulysses S. Grant was the Union commander overseeing 83,000 Union Troops. This battle was won by the Confederacy. There were a total of 27,399 casualties in this battle, 18,399 Union / 9,000 Condeferate.
      5. The Civil War Battle of Antietam : The Battle of Antietam happened in Maryland on September 17, 1862. Robert E. Lee was the Confederate commander overseeing 51,844 Confederate troops. George B. McClellan was the Union commander overseeing 75,316 Union Troops. This battle’s outcome was inconclusive yet it represented a strategic success for the Union. There were a total of 26,134 casualties in this battle, 12,410 Union / 13,724 Condeferate.
      6. The Battle of the Wilderness :  The Battle of the Wilderness happened in Virginia on May 5-7, 1864. Robert E. Lee was the Confederate commander overseeing 61,025 Confederate troops. Ulysses S. Grant was the Union commander overseeing 101,895 Union Troops. This battle’s outcome was inconclusive. There were a total of 25,416 casualties in this battle, 17,666 Union / 7,750 Condeferate.
      7. The Second Battle of Manassas  : The Second Bttle of Manassas happened in Virginia on August 29-30, 1862. Robert E. Lee was the Confederate commander overseeing 48,527 Confederate troops. John Pope was the Union commander overseeing 75,696 Union Troops. This battle was won by the Confederacy. There were a total of 25,251 casualties in this battle, 16,054 Union / 9,197 Condeferate.
      8. The Battle of Stone’s River :  The Battle of Stone’s River happened in Tennessee on December 31, 1862. Braxton Bragg was the Confederate commander overseeing 37,739 Confederate troops. William S. Rosencrans was the Union commander overseeing 41,400 Union Troops. This battle was won by the Union. There were a total of 24,645 casualties in this battle, 12,906 Union / 11,739 Condeferate.
      9. The Battle of Shiloh  : The Battle of Shiloh happened in Tennessee on April 6-7, 1862. Albert Signey Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard were the Confederate commanders overseeing 40,335 Confederate troops. Ulysses S. Grant was the Union commander overseeing 62,682 Union Troops. This battle was won by the Union. There were a total of 23,741 casualties in this battle, 13,047 Union / 10,694 Condeferate.
      10. The Battle of Fort Donelson :  The Battle of Fort Donelson happened in Tennessee on February 13-16, 1862. John B. Floyd and Simon B. Buckner were the Confederate commanders overseeing 21,000 Confederate troops. Ulysses S. Grant was the Union commander overseeing 27,000 Union Troops. This battle was won by the Union. There were a total of 19,455 casualties in this battle, 2,832 Union / 16,623 Condeferate.
