Mae Jemison is an American engineer. She was born on 17th October, 1956. She has also worked as a physician and astronaut. When she was working with NASA as an astronaut then she became the first black woman who was sent in space as there was no black woman sent in space before Mae Jemison. She remained very busy in her career therefore she never married and still she is very busy in her professional duties.
Leaving NASA
At the age of 36 years, Mae Jemison decided to leave NASA and work in other departments. She explained in her resignation letter that she is willing to work as a teacher to make sure that people can get education. She was also interested in health care field for improved health of people. She was also willing to take part in science and technology so that more development can be made in under developed countries. When she was in NASA then she was not able to work in other fields. So she decided to leave her job and focus on other things to give more benefits to people.
Working in space
Mae Jemison was the first African American woman who was sent in space. It was 12th September, 1992 when she was sent in space with a complete team of professionals. She worked in space on different aspects and conducted different experiments. Main areas covered by Mae Jemison were weightlessness and motion sickness. She conducted different experiments on her team and also on herself in order to get details about weightlessness in space. She also worked on motion sickness in space and made different conclusions. While in medical school, she traveled to Cuba, Kenya and Thailand to give people medical assistance. worked in the West Africa Peace Corps as a medical officer. She founded “The Earth We Share” (TEWS) ,an international science camp where students from around the world work together to solve current global issues.
