Mae Jemison is an American engineer. She was born on 17th October, 1956. She has also worked as a physician and astronaut. When she was working with NASA as an astronaut then she became the first black woman who was sent in space as there was no black woman sent in space before Mae Jemison. She remained very busy in her career therefore she never married and still she is very busy in her professional duties.

 

Leaving NASA
At the age of 36 years, Mae Jemison decided to leave NASA and work in other departments. She explained in her resignation letter that she is willing to work as a teacher to make sure that people can get education. She was also interested in health care field for improved health of people. She was also willing to take part in science and technology so that more development can be made in under developed countries. When she was in NASA then she was not able to work in other fields. So she decided to leave her job and focus on other things to give more benefits to people.



 

Working in space
Mae Jemison was the first African American woman who was sent in space. It was 12th September, 1992 when she was sent in space with a complete team of professionals. She worked in space on different aspects and conducted different experiments. Main areas covered by Mae Jemison were weightlessness and motion sickness. She conducted different experiments on her team and also on herself in order to get details about weightlessness in space. She also worked on motion sickness in space and made different conclusions. Her work in space was also admired and appreciated by her team.

 

Popularity and fame
Mae Jemison got popularity and fame when she became the first African American black woman in space in 1992. She is also famous for her company in which she is working at present. Her company is working in medical technology sector and helping the growth of technology and science to fetch more advancement in the world. Her hard working and dedication is admired by others and she is also working as a role model for many women all over the world.

 

Medical education
Mae Jemison completed her medical education in 1981 and started practice in the medical field. During her practice she also conducted different types of researches in the medical field. She was also working as a teacher at that time in the medical field and gaining fame and recognition due to her hard working and dedication. However she had a dream to travel in space therefore she applied in 1985 to NASA so that she can travel in space. There were many applicants and the competition was very tough. Mae Jemison came on merit and selected to be sent in space. She was very happy on her selection as it was her dream to travel in space which gave her a lot of fame and popularity.

 

Career shift
Mae Jemison left NASA for a career shift and started working as a teacher and also started her company in technology field. She remained so busy in her life due to which she has never married. Still she is working in different areas and contributed to the society in many ways.

 

Facts.
While in medical school, she traveled to Cuba, Kenya and Thailand to give people medical assistance. worked in the West Africa Peace Corps as a medical officer. She founded “The Earth We Share” (TEWS) ,an international science camp where students from around the world work together to solve current global issues.
