      George Crum, also known as George Speck, was a remarkable African American chef whose culinary invention revolutionized the snack industry. Born in 1824 in Malta, New York, Crum’s legacy is deeply rooted in his creation of the beloved potato chip.

      George Crum working as a chef at Moon’s Lake House near Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1853, Crum encountered a picky customer who repeatedly sent back his fried potatoes, complaining that they were too thick. Frustrated by the customer’s demands, Crum decided to slice the potatoes paper-thin, fry them to a crisp, and season them generously with salt. To his surprise, the customer loved the crispy chips, and thus, the potato chip was born.           You may also like
